Have you checked back with the stylist that put the extensions in? What has he/she recommended? Most stylist would recommend removing the extensions immediately.

If I were you, I would get a second professional opinion if your stylist doesn't think there is any problem. You are running the risk of permanent damage.

Today there are so many different options for hair extensions. If you are pressed for time and money, there are clip-in extensions or temporary extensions that last for just a few weeks. If you have time and money, there are the more permanent type of extensions that can last for several months.

In between the two extremes, no money and plenty of money, there lies many different hair extension methods to choose from. Each method has distinct advantages over others and you must carefully compare these methods to choose the right method for your hair type.

Not every hair extension method will work for everyone. Be aware that some methods have been exclusively designed for different types of hair, i.e. damaged hair, thin hair, thinning hair, etc.

What would you do if you found out that hair extensions were banned at your school or office?

It was recently reported that in Liberia, students were banned from wearing hairpieces and hair extensions at school. Also banned were any revealing clothing, such as very short skirts, shorts and tops.

Officials in Liberia have mentioned the reason behind the ban is that girls were not focusing on their studies, instead wanting to go to the bathroom and look at and mess with their hair.

The time to investigate whether the salon was charging you fairly was before you got hair extensions. But now on the road cannot find someone that knows that method so need something easy for a hair dresser to apply without a ton of thought

Answer: There are many different hair extension methods available today. Since improper attachment and removal can cause severe damage to your hair, I wouldn't recommend going with just any stylist, especially one that isn't trained.

I recently read that Kate Moss allowed her 4-year old daughter to get hair extensions. The pre-schooler now has long blonde hair all the way to her waist. I have to say I am a little shocked. But then I think, why am I shocked?

I guess the primary thought that I have is Why are we so keen on having our kids grow up so fast? What's the hurry? You can only be a kid for so long, then it is gone. Then there are adults who go back and try to act like kids. Just doesn't make sense to me.

When I was in school, I couldn't wait to get out and get my own job--make my own money. Now that I have done that, my thoughts are --what was the big hurry.

So, you want to get hair extensions and you haven't a clue where to start. Well, first you need to decide on a specific hair extension method. There are many to choose from and each has distinct advantages and disadvantages that you must consider.

After you have decided on a method, you will need to find a salon that offers that method and preferrably one that is close to you. Don't get me wrong, you can drive hours to a salon that offers hair extensions. Sometimes you may not have a choice as there are no qualified hair extensions stylist that work close to where you live.

I just had hair extensions put in and love them so far. I doing more research and found your great website. I want to buy one of the on-line books, but am not sure which of the two that apply to me to get. I am concerned about care and maintenance at this point more than anything. However, I would like to learn more about how they were applied as well. I am wondering why it was so uncomfortable when they were applied. The Great Lengths system was used on me. My scalp was sore for a few days. Is this normal?

As to your Great Lengths extensions application issue, no application of extensions should hurt. You say "uncomfortable", and that your scalp was sore for a few days. I am not sure that this should be the case with these types of extensions. I do know, from my extensive research on hair extensions that the application of the hair extensions should not hurt you in any way. If it does hurt, then they may not be applied correctly. A specific method that I know this refers to is the braiding method, where your natural hair is braided and the extensions are sewn into the braid. If the braids are done too tightly, you will have a very sore scalp and possible hair loss issues down the road.

I can understand the scalp being a little sore, but from the added weight of the extension hair not from the application procedure. Human hair is very heavy.

Once you start hearing about the marvelous outcome of hair extension services, it is very tempting to start thinking that maybe they would work for you.

There are several up-front pieces of information that you should be aware of if you are considering hair extensions.

1. They are expensive. Human hair comes in many different qualities and textures. The best quality hair, called cuticle or remi hair, is in short supply and is therefore quite expensive. If you want the best hair (believe me when it comes to hair extensions- you want the best hair--will explain later.). Synthetic hair has greatly improved in quality over the years and offers a great alternative to human hair. It is usually less expensive than human hair, but it has a few limitations.

2. Hair extensions are not for everyone. Not everyone should get hair extensions just because they want them. If your hair is extremely damaged, thinning or very frail, it may not be able to handle the extra weight of the extension hair, causing your natural hair to fall out. This could even result in permanent hair loss. Yikes!

3. Hair extensions must be maintained. A lot of the damage to the natural hair occurs when the extension hair is not properly maintained. Some extensions must be washed with specific hair care products, brushed regularly and taken care of--just like you would long hair. You must have extra time each morning to wash, dry and style your longer hair. It does take time. Ask any women with long hair how much time she spends taking care of it. The extensions can only be left in for a certain amount of time and you must make regular visits to your stylist to keep them in tip-t0p shape.

4. Hair extensions are very addictive. Once you see yourself with long flowing celebrity hair, you won't want to ever change it. There are many women that wear hair extensions continuously now because they just love the way that they look with them. I had a hair dresser put in hair extensions. I had seen some of her other clients with extensions. My extensions were applied with the metal bands and my hair is fine but I had alot of it.When she removed the extensions I ended up with REALLY thin hair. Can you give me some info on why and what to do about it. I am really upset about this and feel totally ugly. My hair won't hold a curl put in by a round brush and blow dryer either.

Answer:
I am sorry you are having trouble with the look of your hair after the extensions. We frequently get Emails from people that have very similar problems. Even though you know you are not alone, it still makes you feel bad.Anyways, I am not a professional cosmetologists and can not offer a professional opinion. However, I have done extensive research on hair extensions and can provide you with tips and advice that I have come across over the last few years. Of course this info is Use At Your Own Risk.

There are several reasons that your hair seems to appear very thin after removing the hair extensions.

1. Normal hair loss every day is 100-150 strands of hair. When you have hair extensions attached to your normal hair, this hair still falls out, but remains attached to the extension hair. This leaves less of your natural hair holding the extension in place. If you leave the extensions in too long, or your hair is fragile, then the weight of the extensions in the hair can actually pull out the natural hair along with the extensions, causing very thin hair or even permanent hair loss. Did you lose a lot of extensions when you were wearing them? And how long did you have the extensions in your hair?

2. Perception--After having beautiful thick hair for awhile, you get used to it. When they are removed your hair appears super thin. Do you remember the thickness of your pony tail before your hair extensions were attached. I.E. was it the size of a quarter.

3. Your hair stylist did not remove them properly. Most damage occurs during the removal process. Did you check out your stylist (i.e. call references, see before/after photos, etc.)

Solutions to get your hair back in shape.
1. Treat your hair very carefully. Try not to do any chemical processing, such as perms, color, highlights.
2. Switch to a thickening shampoo/conditioner. Some shampoos/conditioners I have heard (in various forums) that are good are the Nioxin ones and Aveda Hair Thickening Shampoo . My husband has a hair thinning problem and I ordered the Nioxin system for him. It makes his hair look more healthy and thicker. Question: I have thin/fine hair that is kind of damaged from dying and flat ironing. So I was wondering if the extensions would ruin my hair or if its a bad idea to get them? I don't want to cause any further damage or like permanently ruin my hair.

Hair Resources Answer: I am not a professional cosmetologist, so I cannot give you a professional opinion. However, I have done extensive research on hair extensions and I can share with you some information that I have learned.

Human hair extensions are very heavy, and if attached to hair that is damaged, they can result in permanent hair loss. The extensions can pull out your natural hair because of the extra weight of the human hair and the damaged condition of your natural hair. Synthetic hair extensions weigh about 1/3 the weight of human hair and may be more suitable for your situation.

You can do a stress test on your hair yourself to see how damaged it is. Take one strand of hair and pull it. If it comes out very easily, then your hair may not be suitable for extensions. If you have to pull it pretty hard, then your hair may be okay.

If you really want to get hair extensions, perhaps the best place to start is schedule several hair extension consulations at different salons near you. You have done all of your research and are now ready to go to your hair extension appointment. Your stylist should tell you about how long it will take and whether you should bring anything, i.e. small lunch, books or magazines to read, etc.

If you are unhappy about the color of the extensions, you should mention it right away-early in that attachment process. It may be easier for the stylist to change a color when the hair extensions are not attached to your head.

Hair extensions attachment should not physically hurt you. If your stylist is using a braiding/sew-in method, it is possible to get the braids too tight. This will result in tension and additional stress at the scalp, resulting in scalp soreness and possibly your natural hair falling out.

As far as tipping is concerned, you should tip your stylist for his/her time and the quality of the work they have done. Tips for hair extension services can range from 0-15% of the total price for the service.

Be sure to ask very specific questions about how to take care of your hair extensions? What shampoos, conditioners should you use, can you comb/brush the hair, can you air-dry your hair after you wash it, can you go swimming, can you perm or color the hair, etc.

Improper maintenance of the hair extensions can shorten their life.

Check the salon and stylist out

After you have been to all of your hair extension consultations, you will need to sort out all the information so you can decide which method and which stylist/salon to go with.
Before you make your decision, you will need to check out the salon and stylist. There are several different places to go.

1. Verify with your State Board of Cosmetology that no complaints have been filed against the salon or stylist. FYI--There are some US states that do not require a Cosmetology license to do hair extensions. If the stylist does not have a cosmetology license, then the State Board would not record any complaint.

2. Verify with the hair extension company that the stylist is indeed certified and trained by them.

3. Verify with your local Better Business Bureau that no complaints have been filed.

4. Do an Internet search for the stylist and/or salon to see if they are mentioned in any hair extension forums. Email us at editor@hairresources.net to see if we have had any complaints about the salon

5. Check references if the salon has given you some. This is a touchy subject since most salon clients that get hair extensions do not want everyone knowing that they have them. Also, many stylists feel it is unprofessional and inconsiderate to be passing out their clients names and phone numbers.
Another thing to consider when it comes to references is that what stylist in his/her right mind would give out the name/number of a client would give them a bad recommendation?

6. Make a Pros and Cons list for each stylist. Include all the important facts that you have compiled from your research and your consultations. If you have additional questions, call the stylist back, or search online for the answers.

Sometimes when men and women decide they want hair extensions, they just make an appointment at a salon near them and go get them. While this approach may work sometimes, many times the end result is either damaged hair or a very unhappy extension client. If you are informed and prepared to get hair extensions you will avoid many of the common mistakes made when getting hair extensions.

The next step involves using the information you discovered in step 3, so if you are trying to skip steps---go back and do step 3. Anyways, back to Step 4: Select a salon and schedule your hair extension consultation (and go to it). It may be advisable to schedule several hair extension consultations--even if they charge you. They usually apply this fee to the cost of the hair extensions if you go with them. This is money well spent. The basic ways to attach hair extensions are: bonding, fusion, weaving, braiding + sewn in, locs, links, tubes, braiding and tape.

Bonding: This is the quickest method. A bonding glue is applied onto the weft of the extension hair and then applied at the root of your hair. This is a temporary method.

Fusion: This is a process done strand by strand in small sections. Various types of adhesive based material is used to add the extension hair directly to your own hair. Many celebrities have this type of hair extension since it looks like the extension hair grew out of your own head.

Weaving: Corn rows or tracks are created around the head and close to the scalp. Extension hair, or wefts of hair are sewn on the tracks. Your own hair lays over the tracks for a natural look.

Braiding: Similar to weaving above, tiny braids are created close to the scalp and the extension hair is sewn directly into the braids.

Locs, Links: Tiny locs or links are used to hold the extension hair to strands of your natural hair

Step 1: Determine if hair extensions are for you.

Hair extensions are not a one-size fits all. There are many factors that you should consider before you even think about getting hair extensions.

1. Time. Long hair requires extra time and work. You will need to allow for more time to shampoo, condition, blow dry and style your hair if you get hair extensions. If you currently do not spend a lot of time on your hair, consider how you will make more time in your daily routine to take care and maintain long hair extensions.

2. Money. This is a major factor. Hair extensions can be very expensive. They can range between $500-$6000 and up.

The quality of the hair that is used is directly connected to the price you pay. The higher the price, the better the quality---or at least it should be.

A big part of the expense involved in hair extensions is the labor. Hair extensions can be very tedious to attach--sometimes taking a hair stylist 2-8 hours to attach a full head of extensions.
This hair stylist will be giving up all of his/her regularly scheduled appointments to work on your hair.

And, hair extensions must be maintained on a regular basis-from every 2 weeks to several months depending on the method. Some hair extensions are removed and re-attached. With some methods, you must use new hair each time the hair is re-attached. All of this will require more money.

There are extra hair care products required for some types of hair extensions. Don't spend a fortune getting hair extensions and then ruin them by not buying the right hair care products.

3.Hair Condition. Is your hair damaged in any way? Hair extensions may not be an option for you.
