Before Getting Hair Extensions

The beautiful long hairstyle is very enticing when you consider that you can go to the salon and spend a few hours to get long hair.  Before you rush off, you should consider these important factors:

1. Hair extensions are expensive.  Not only are they expensive to get, they are expensive to maintain.  If you want to keep the long hair look, you will need to go back to your stylist every 6-8 weeks (depending on how fast your hair grows) and have them removed and re-attached closer to the root area.

This beautiful blonde 'do, see photo left,  has long layers cut around the back and sides to encourage the bounce of the curls which add movement and shape. This curly hairstyle is great for those looking for a simple yet stunning look to compliment a log face shape.

This maintenance visit every few months will cost money, and depending on what type of hair is used for your extensions, you may have to purchase brand new hair every so often and the extension hair can become tangled and unusable.

2. Hair extensions can damage your hair. If the extensions are not attached and removed properly, there is the possibility that your natural hair will become damaged- even permanently damaged.  This is why it is essential that you select a hair stylist that is trained and certified to attach extensions.  Special training and certification is mandatory for most of the major brands of extensions.

3. Daily maintenance can be time consuming.  Depending on the type of extensions you get, your daily habits may need changing. Examples include using special shampoos, drying the hair completely, de-tangling when necessary, avoiding swimming pools, etc. Be sure to ask your hair stylist what limitations the hair extensions will  have for your daily routine and lifestyle.

How to get hair extensions

Hair extensions are back in the news this year as many are flocking to salons to get an instant long hair style for spring occasions.  No longer do you have to wait for years for your hair to grow out, you can get instant long hair by attaching hair extensions to your natural hair.

Megan Fox, see photo below, has a long hair style. Long seductive layers through the ends of this hairstyle adds movement and flair to the over-all look. This hairstyle is simple yet sexy and great for those looking for a low-maintenance 'do.

Getting a long hair style like Megan's is really just an appointment away.

The process involves a few hours at the salon and several hundred if not thousands of dollars.  There are many different methods for attaching the extensions and also many different types of hair.  Since this is an involved process, hair extensions do have the potential to damage your natural hair. It is very important that you select a stylists that has experience and the appropriate training for extensions. If you go for cheap hair extensions you may end up with damaged hair.  Do your research on getting hair extensions here.

Getting hair extensions for prom

If you are looking for a great hair style for prom, why not consider getting hair extensions.  Hair extensions are attached to your natural hair by one of many different methods.  The hair can be either synthetic or human. Other options, besides the permanent hair extensions are clip-in extensions.  These are clipped right in to your hair and can give you an instant long hair style that is removable whenever you want.  The clip-ins are typically much less expensive than permanent extensions.  See Hair Extensions How to Guide for more details.

Great Alternative to Permanent Hair Extensions

Many women excitedly look at permanent hair extensions only to dismiss getting them after finding out the cost.  The cost of the hair can be high, along with paying a stylist to attach and remove them.  Not to mention the fact that hair extensions can cause damage to your natural hair.

A great alternative to permanent hair extensions is clip-in hair extensions.  The clip-ins cost just a fraction of what regular extensions cost, plus they have several added benefits.  You can attach and remove them whenever and however many times you want. Generally speaking, they do not cause damage to your natural hair. The quality of the hair used in clip-ins depends on the brand that you get and the manufacturer. It is better (although more expensive) to get human hair clip-in extensions than synthetic ones. Human hair can be styled with a curling iron or flat iron, will look more natural and will tend to tangle less if the hair is a certain quality.

So many different types of hair extensions

Hair extensions are so popular today that there is an overwhelming amount of products, systems and types of hair available on the market. There are the temporary extensions that are called clip-ins. These are long pieces of human or synthetic hair attached to a hair clip. You clip the extension in to your natural hair in various places to create a very natural looking long hairstyle. It can take several practice runs to get the extensions clipped in just right to create amazing looks.

Some women take the hair extensions to their stylist and have them attached professionally. Jessica Simpson has a complete line of her own clip in extensions that she sells with her famous stylist Ken Paves. The clip-in extension is a great way to get an instant long hairstyle without spending a fortune or a lot of time.
