How to choose hair extension stylists

Choose Your Hair Extension Stylist Wisely

There are many important factors you must consider before choosing your hair extension stylist. Getting hair extensions is not like getting your hair cut or even colored. Attaching and removing hair extensions requires a certain amount of skill and training. If the stylist you select doesn't have the proper training you could end up with empty pockets and damaged hair.

Here are a few guidelines to selecting your stylist:
1. Schedule at least 3 hair extension consultations.
2. Verify that the stylist has the credentials/training they say they do.
3. Get at least 3 references from each stylist and call them all.
4. Read every little word on any contract they give you.
5. Ask exactly what happens if something goes wrong.
5. Call the Board of Cosmetology in your state to verify the stylist does have a cosmetology license and check if any complaints have been filed against him/her.
6. Check with the Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been filed against the stylist of salon.
7. "Google" the salon/stylist and hair extension method.
8. Visit Hair Extension forums and check if anyone has mentioned the stylist or salon.
9. Take notes during your consultation so that you can better compare salons/methods later.
10. NEVER NEVER sign a contract during the consultation. Always go home, do research and homework and read the contract in full before signing.

Common myths of hair extensions

There are many common myths about hair extensions that you will hear repeated over and over again. There may be a small amount of truth to these myths, but in the end they are only myths.

1. Hair extensions do not cause any type of damage to your hair. This is something that many hair extension companies will say. The truth is, you are attaching additional hair to your natural hair by one of many different methods. The added hair can cause extra stress on your natural hair at the roots, because of the extra weight and at the point of attachment, where the extension is attached. Every method of hair extensions has the potential to cause serious damage to your hair. The key to minimizing any damage to your hair is to select your stylist and hair extension method very carefully. A well trained hair extension stylist that uses a quality hair extension product can attach hair extensions to the natural hair with very little damage.

2. Hair extensions are undetectable. No matter what method of hair extensions you go with, there will be a point of attachment. You will definitely be able to tell that there is an extension in your hair. The key to making the hair extensions less detectable to other people is--again---a well trained hair extension stylist with experience at blending in the extensions with your natural hair.

3. Cheap hair extensions are just as good as the high priced ones. When it comes to hair extensions (there may be a few exceptions) the more money you pay, you are likely to be getting better quality hair and a better trained hair extension stylist. Human hair that has very little processing is more expensive and will tend to last longer without tangles. A high priced hair extension stylist is likely to have attended special hair extension training classes and received many hours of training. They charge higher prices because they must recover all of their costs for training and upgraded equipment.

These are just 3 common myths about hair extensions. For more details you can purchase our Ebook on hair extension methods, costs, stylists, consultations and more. Visit http://www.hairextensionsexposed.com/

How much do hair extensions cost?

Hair Extensions Costs

One of the first questions that many women ask when they start thinking about getting hair extensions is "How much do they cost" This is probably not the place to start, but it will give you a good idea as to whether you should pursue getting hair extensions.

Probably the biggest factor, other than the costs of course, in getting hair extensions is the efffect the hair extensions will have on your natural hair in the long run. Will you be sacrificing short-term long gorgeous hair for long-term damaged hair?

The best way to get answers to your questions about hair extensions is to schedule several hair extension consulations and ask a lot of questions. In the Ebook, Hair Extensions Exposed, there is an entire chapter devoted to the hair extension consultation.

What should you ask the stylist about during the consultations. What are the major red flags you need to be aware of during a consultation. Are there warning signs for a bad hair extension stylist? How do you check out the stylist to make sure they are properly trained or certified to do hair extensions.

Answers to all of these questions can be found the Hair Extensions Exposed. For a short time only, there is a $25 coupon off the full retail price. The Ebook can be ordered 24/7 and you will be directed immediately to the download page upon payment.

Options for hair extensions

So, you want to get hair extensions......

Today there are so many different options for hair extensions. If you are pressed for time and money, there are clip-in extensions or temporary extensions that last for just a few weeks. If you have time and money, there are the more permanent type of extensions that can last for several months.

In between the two extremes, no money and plenty of money, there lies many different hair extension methods to choose from. Each method has distinct advantages over others and you must carefully compare these methods to choose the right method for your hair type.

Not every hair extension method will work for everyone. Be aware that some methods have been exclusively designed for different types of hair, i.e. damaged hair, thin hair, thinning hair, etc.

It is very important that you schedule 2-4 hair extension consultations and compare methods and costs before you ever make the decision to extend. And whatever you do, don't every sign an agreement during the consulation. Always wait a few days to read over everything very carefully and prepare a list of questions that you might have.

Hair extensions have the potential to cause damage to your hair. Take your decision to extend very seriously. If things don't go right, you could end up with damaged hair....and lose tons of money trying to fix problems.

Long Hair Styles With Bangs

If you are thinking about getting hair extensions you have a lot of research to do. First you need to figure out which hair extension method to go with--one that will work for your hair type and what you want (thickness or length, or both)
After you have selected a hair extension method, gone to several hair extension consultations and selected a stylist that you are comfortable with, you must decide on how you will have your hair styled.
The stylist will attach your extensions and you will need to cut/shape the hair into a particular style that you like.
Consider adding bangs to your long hair style, like Ashley Tisdale has done, see photo above. These are long side-swept bangs that are about nose level. There may be a little layering in them since they do have that full appearance.
Ask your stylist if bangs will work with your overall hair style and hair extensions. Bangs are hot and in style this fall.
Check out all the different types of bangs that you can get in our brand new Hair Styles With Bangs Gallery located at http://www.hrbangs.com/

Hair Extensions Banned

Tell us what you think about banning hair extensions

What would you do if you found out that hair extensions were banned at your school or office?

It was recently reported that in Liberia, students were banned from wearing hairpieces and hair extensions at school. Also banned were any revealing clothing, such as very short skirts, shorts and tops.

Officials in Liberia have mentioned the reason behind the ban is that girls were not focusing on their studies, instead wanting to go to the bathroom and look at and mess with their hair.

Maybe the ban seems a little extreme compared to the standards in the United States. What are your thoughts? Please leave your comments below.

What to do when you get bad hair extensions

Question and Answer session with Hair Resources Editor

Dear Editor: I recently had work done at a hair extension salon and I look just awful. I got professional opinions from other experts and they said I should at the very least get some of my money back and I was overcharged for half a head of hair (I look like I have a mullet).

The stylist has refused to do anything about my dissatisfaction and has claimed that since I am not a hair expert I have no right to tell her how much I should have paid and no right to go to other professionals for their opinions. I did not read your guide and get a guarantee before hand :(

Hair Resources Editor Response:
Unfortunately all methods of hair extensions have the potential to cause damage. The expertise of the stylist can make or break your hair during the attachment or removal process. Another major factor is if you are starting with thin or damaged hair. There are methods that are actually designed for damaged hair and they are much gentler on the hair. Synthetic hair may be a better option since it weighs about 1/3 the weight of human hair and puts less stress on the roots.

As to whether you should get your money back or not, that is a very gray area. Many stylists require you to sign a waiver that if anything goes wrong they are not responsible. You would need to prove that the salon/stylist was negligent in attaching/removing the extensions. In the end, the salon has the right to charge whatever they want for their services and hair and you have the option to not pay for it.

The time to investigate whether the salon was charging you fairly was before you got hair extensions. In our Ebook, Hair Extensions Exposed, we recommend that clients schedule 2-4 hair extensions consultations at different salons offering different methods so that you can compare costs, methods, etc.

The real focus right now should be any damage that has occured to your hair. Has the salon offered to remedy your situation in any way, and did you sign any sort of disclaimer? Your options right now are to file a lawsuit and/or a complaint with the cosmetology board in your state or resolving the issue with your stylist.

Bad Hair Extensions Experience

Letter to the Editor about hair extension services received

Question: I recently had hair extensions attached and I look just awful. I got professional opinions from other experts and they said I should at the very least get some of my money back and I was overcharged for half a head of hair (I look like I have a mullet). The stylist has refused to do anything about my dissatisfaction.

Two things that a lot of hair stylists have said is that the hair extensions that my stylist attached are very damaging to African American and ethnic hair and that the chemical used to remove the bonds is equally damaging. Many said they never would have used this process on my thin and damaged hair and that it will just damage it further...have you heard anything to that extent?

Answer: Unfortunately all methods of hair extensions have the potential to cause damage. The expertise of the stylist can make or break your hair during the attachment or removal process. Hair extension method question answered

As the editor for the Hair Resources Network, I frequently get Emails from consumers about hair extensions. Below is a question about different hair extension methods.

Question: I have been in search of a method to apply hair extentions. I DO NOT WANT GLUE. I want something harmless to my hair. I have used Bellargo in the past. But now on the road cannot find someone that knows that method so need something easy for a hair dresser to apply without a ton of thought

Answer: There are many different hair extension methods available today. Since improper attachment and removal can cause severe damage to your hair, I wouldn't recommend going with just any stylist, especially one that isn't trained.

Since hair extensions have become so popular, there are many more trained hair stylists that offer the service. We have published an Ebook that details all the different methods available. It is available at http://www.hairextensionsexposed.com/

If you would like to research the method yourself, I would recommend visiting our Hair Extensions Resource Center at http://www.hairresources.net/ Just follow the 'Hair Extensions' link and go to '6 Steps' to getting hair extensions. I believe some of the methods are listed in Step 3.

FYI--All methods can cause damage to the hair. For non-fusion (non-glue) methods check out: Pro Styles, Hair Locs, Euro Locs, Mark Barrington, Dome. Extend Magic, Ultratress

If you are interested in doing the extensions yourself, check out Protac--visit http://www.shrinkies.net/ and also http://www.doctoredlocks.net/ You should be able to purchase supplies from these places. Also check out a brand new DIY extension method- http://www.tiffanytwist.com/ The Hair Extension forum at http://talk.hairboutique.com/ has a lot of posts from people that do their own extensions. It may be very useful if you want to do them yourself.

Should kids get hair extensions?

I recently read that Kate Moss allowed her 4-year old daughter to get hair extensions. The pre-schooler now has long blonde hair all the way to her waist. I have to say I am a little shocked. But then I think, why am I shocked?

I guess the primary thought that I have is Why are we so keen on having our kids grow up so fast? What's the hurry? You can only be a kid for so long, then it is gone. Then there are adults who go back and try to act like kids. Just doesn't make sense to me.

When I was in school, I couldn't wait to get out and get my own job--make my own money. Now that I have done that, my thoughts are --what was the big hurry.

So, what do you think about Kate Moss's 4-year old daughter getting hair extensions? Leave your comments below.

Hair extensions for your wedding?

You have the perfect wedding dress picked out, all of the party details in place and now you are trying to decide on how you will wear your hair.

If you love the look of a long beautiful hair style for your wedding, but you only have medium or short hair, then you may be in luck.

Hair extensions are very popular today and offer the flexibility of getting long hair in just a few hours. Human or synthetic hair is attached to your natural hair by one of many different methods for a free-flowing look.

For best results, you should plan to get hair extensions several weeks before your wedding to make sure everything turns out okay. Sometimes the hair extensions can fall out or cause major matteing and tangling---if the extensions are not attached properly and if cheap, inferior quality hair is used---so you wouln't want any suprises like that just before your wedding.

Visit http://www.hairextensionsexposed.com for details of every aspect of getting hair extensions.

Finding a Hair Extensions Stylist

So, you want to get hair extensions and you haven't a clue where to start. Well, first you need to decide on a specific hair extension method. There are many to choose from and each has distinct advantages and disadvantages that you must consider.

After you have decided on a method, you will need to find a salon that offers that method and preferrably one that is close to you. Don't get me wrong, you can drive hours to a salon that offers hair extensions. But, what if you have something go wrong or you need to go for maintenance visits often, then you may not like that 1-4 hour drive each way each time. Sometimes you may not have a choice as there are no qualified hair extensions stylist that work close to where you live.

A great place to start is with the hair extension company method. Call the company directly to find out if there are any qualified stylist in your area. This will eliminate one additional step later that recommends you verify the stylist is certified and trained by the company. The company will not recommend any stylist who is not properly trained or one who has been de-certified for some reason.

Since hair extension services can generate a large amount of revenue for a stylist, there is the incentive to just fudge things a little bit--especially when you may be earning thousands of dollars.

Sore Scalp after Getting Hair Extensions

Letter to the Editor:
I just had hair extensions put in and love them so far. I doing more research and found your great website. I want to buy one of the on-line books, but am not sure which of the two that apply to me to get. I am concerned about care and maintenance at this point more than anything. However, I would like to learn more about how they were applied as well. I am wondering why it was so uncomfortable when they were applied. The Great Lengths system was used on me. My scalp was sore for a few days. Is this normal?

Answer:
Both of the Ebooks, 2005's Most Popular Hair Extensions and Hair Extensions-The Official Consumers Guide to Getting Hair Extensions have care and maintenance tips for hair extensions. The tips encompass all the different methods available today. Some methods will have special care instructions that you hair stylist should be telling you about. Our tips are more general in nature, a compilation from many different extension hair stylists and hair extension companies.

Both books also contain the details of 27 different hair extension methods. The most recent details are in the Hair Extensions-The Official Consumers Guide to Getting Hair Extensions, along with several before and after photos. The Ebook, Hair Extensions Exposed is the most complete of all our Hair Extensions Book. It contains details on over 37 different hair extension methods along with a large Bonus Before/After hair extension photo gallery, a Hair Extension Comparison Chart and a Hair Extension Suitability Test. It is available at http://www.hairextensionsexposed.com

As to your Great Lengths extensions application issue, no application of extensions should hurt. You say "uncomfortable", and that your scalp was sore for a few days. I am not sure that this should be the case with these types of extensions. I do know, from my extensive research on hair extensions that the application of the hair extensions should not hurt you in any way. If it does hurt, then they may not be applied correctly. A specific method that I know this refers to is the braiding method, where your natural hair is braided and the extensions are sewn into the braid. If the braids are done too tightly, you will have a very sore scalp and possible hair loss issues down the road.

I can understand the scalp being a little sore, but from the added weight of the extension hair not from the application procedure. Human hair is very heavy.

Did you verify that your hair stylist was a certified Great Lengths Stylist?

Thinking about hair extensions?

Hair extensions....Maybe?

Once you start hearing about the marvelous outcome of hair extension services, it is very tempting to start thinking that maybe they would work for you.

There are several up-front pieces of information that you should be aware of if you are considering hair extensions.

1. They are expensive. Human hair comes in many different qualities and textures. The best quality hair, called cuticle or remi hair, is in short supply and is therefore quite expensive. If you want the best hair (believe me when it comes to hair extensions- you want the best hair--will explain later.). Synthetic hair has greatly improved in quality over the years and offers a great alternative to human hair. It is usually less expensive than human hair, but it has a few limitations.

2. Hair extensions are not for everyone. Not everyone should get hair extensions just because they want them. If your hair is extremely damaged, thinning or very frail, it may not be able to handle the extra weight of the extension hair, causing your natural hair to fall out. This could even result in permanent hair loss. Yikes!

3. Hair extensions must be maintained. A lot of the damage to the natural hair occurs when the extension hair is not properly maintained. Some extensions must be washed with specific hair care products, brushed regularly and taken care of--just like you would long hair. You must have extra time each morning to wash, dry and style your longer hair. It does take time. Ask any women with long hair how much time she spends taking care of it. The extensions can only be left in for a certain amount of time and you must make regular visits to your stylist to keep them in tip-t0p shape.

4. Hair extensions are very addictive. Once you see yourself with long flowing celebrity hair, you won't want to ever change it. There are many women that wear hair extensions continuously now because they just love the way that they look with them. Of course if your extensions are properly maintained, your natural hair will continue to grow out and in several years your natural hair should be long as well.

5. There are many different methods for attaching hair extensions. Be sure to research all the methods before deciding on a specific one. Hair Extensions should not be an impulse purchase. Do your homework or you may be very sorry.

For more great reseach info on hair extensions, read Hair Extensions-The Official Consumer's Guide to Getting Hair Extensions.

Damaged hair and extensions

Getting hair extensions when your hair is damaged

Hair extensions involve attaching human or synthetic hair to your natural hair by one of many different methods. The hair can be attached strand by strand--where the strand is about 20-30 hairs, or they can be attached in wefts, where the hair is attached at the top by a tiny little curtain.

Some of the methods available today include fusion, bonding, sew-in, mini locs, clips, sleeves, links and string. Some methods are more suitable for damaged hair and will even help to improve the condition of the hair.

The hair stylist that does extensions should be properly trained to deal with all sorts of hair situations. If the wrong method is used on damaged hair, it can result in the extensions pulling out the natural hair--even resulting in permanent hair loss.

So, the morale of the story is, DO YOUR RESEARCH on hair extensions before you get them. Don't just make an appointment somewhere and get extensions. Research all the different methods available, schedule several extension consultations (even if they charge for them) because in the end you are making a big investment financially as well as emotionally.

If you get bad extensions, not only will you have thrown away your hard-earned money, but also you will be scarred emotionally if you have any kind of hair loss or permanent damage to your natural hair.
